WELCOME TO THE MOST PEACEFUL FAMILY BEACH
Explore Holden Beach
Holden Beach calls itself North Carolina’s Family Beach, and after just a few days here you’ll see why. Vince has been coming to this island for more than 35 years, and it still feels like the place he fell in love with as a kid. Beach cottages up on stilts, wide quiet stretches of sand, the sound of the waves from the porch, and not a high-rise in sight.
New to Holden Beach? Here’s what a week looks like for our family. Sandcastles at low tide, boogie boarding until lunch, casting a line in the surf, bike rides down Ocean Boulevard, shrimp boats heading out on the Lockwood Folly, and sunsets over the Intracoastal from the bridge on the way back from dinner.
Summer is for the whole crew, from grandparents to the littlest cousins. But fall might be our favorite. The water stays warm, the beach gets quiet, and the fishermen show up for red drum and flounder. In October the island throws its Festival by the Sea, and from late spring through summer, loggerhead sea turtles nest right on this beach.
When you want a day off the sand, you can get to Calabash seafood, the waterfront in Southport, Ocean Isle Beach, the shops in Shallotte or the popular town Wilmington in under an hour.
Our guide below has everything we tell our own family before they come: where to eat, which beach accesses we love, where to fish, and what to do on a rainy day. Come stay with us at The Ohana House or 226 Ocean Blvd E, where the beach gear is already waiting for you. All you need to bring is yourself and clothes.

About Holden Beach, NC
For more than 100 years, families have been crossing the water to spend their summers on Holden Beach. Ours is one of them. Vince has more than 35 years of vacations on this island, and now we get to share it with yours.
The story starts in 1756, when Benjamin Holden was granted the land by King George II and used it for fishing and grazing cattle. In 1924, his family opened Holden Beach Resort, the first beach subdivision in Brunswick County. Back then, getting here took a little effort. A wooden ferry was pulled across the waterway by hand, until a swing bridge took its place in 1954. That same October, Hurricane Hazel destroyed most of the 300 homes on the island, and the families came back and rebuilt. The town became official on Valentine’s Day in 1969, and the high-rise bridge you drive over today opened in 1986.
Here’s what hasn’t changed. Holden Beach is still mostly homes, with just a small stretch of shops and no high-rise hotels. That’s exactly why the town calls itself The Family Beach. About 900 people live here year-round. In summer, the island fills up with families, grandparents, girls’ trips and fishermen who come back every single year.
You get more than 8 miles of beach between the Lockwood Folly and Shallotte inlets. Shell hunting, surf fishing, boating, crabbing in the marsh and watching sea turtle nests from May through October fill the days. Shallotte is about 10 minutes away for groceries and restaurants. Wilmington and Myrtle Beach are each about an hour’s drive when you want a day trip, and close to 125 golf courses sit within an hour of the island.
Then every October, the whole town comes out for the NC Festival by the Sea, with a parade over the Holden Beach bridge, local art, live music and food.
Come see why families keep coming back year after year. Book your stay with us at The Ohana House or 226 Ocean Blvd E.
